Samsung may start charging for some Galaxy AI features by the end of 2025
Samsung has said that it will provide Galaxy AI features for free on all supported smartphones until the end of 2025.
Samsung Galaxy AI features: Samsung recently launched the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE smartphone in India. Besides a bigger battery and a newer processor, support for Samsung's generative AI-based assistant, Galaxy AI, remained one of the biggest highlights of the phone. Now, just days after the launch, Samsung has said that it plans to charge Samsung device owners for using Galaxy AI in the near future.
The company, in the footnote of the Galaxy S24 FE release, wrote that it will start charging users for using Galaxy AI by the end of 2025. It also confirmed the same in the footnote of its Galaxy AI support page. "Galaxy AI features will be provided for free until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices," Samsung wrote in the footnote.
Galaxy AI supported Samsung devices
At the moment, Galaxy AI support is available on a limited set of devices, which includes, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and TWS earbuds.
Supported smartphones include the Galaxy S24 FE, Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z Fold6, Z Flip6, Galaxy Z Fold5, Z Flip5, Galaxy Z Fold4, and the Galaxy Z Flip4. Supported tabs include the Galaxy Tab S9 series and the Galaxy Tab S8 series. Supported smartwatches include the Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Galaxy Watch 7, the supported earbuds include Galaxy Buds3 Pro, Galaxy Buds3, Galaxy Buds2 Pro, Galaxy Buds2 and the Galaxy Buds FE.
How will this change affect the users?
When Samsung makes Galaxy AI a paid service, Samsung Galaxy device owners will not be able to use features such as Circle to Search, Note Assist, Interpreter, Live Translate and Photo Assist, without paying a premium for the same.
That said, it remains unclear if the company will charge a premium on all the Galaxy AI features or if it will entice users to pay for the Galaxy AI subscription by offering some features for free.
Notably, Samsung is not the only company that is planning to offer generative AI-based features as a subscription service. Reports suggest that Apple could also charge its users for more premium Apple Intelligence features. The company is expected to charge users up to $20 for Apple Intelligence features as a part of its Apple One subscription plan.
