Vivo has replaced Samsung to become the second most-selling brand in India's smartphone market in the third quarter of 2024, according to CyberMedia Research's latest data. The market research firm's India Mobile Handset Market Review Report for Q3 2024 has revealed that Vivo grew 10 per cent year-over-year to secure a market share of 16.3 per cent in the market, while Samsung captured the third spot with a marginally less 16.2 per cent market share.

India's 5G smartphone market saw a year-over-year growth of 3 per cent in Q3 2024, the report said, citing robust consumer demand, especially in the mid-range and premium smartphone categories, despite economic headwinds. The shipments of 5G smartphones rose to 82 per cent, accounting for a 49 per cent YoY growth. The smartphones in the Rs 10,000-Rs 13,000 segment saw a YoY surge of over 100 per cent during the quarter, the report said.

While Vivo, with a 10 per cent YoY growth, and Samsung, registering a 3 per cent YoY decline, captured the second and third spots with a marginal difference in their shipment volumes, Xiaomi topped the chart with a 17 per cent share during 2024's third quarter. According to the data, Xiaomi -- which recently saw the exit of its India president Muralikrishnan B -- grew 4 per cent YoY, driven by smartphones like Redmi 13C 5G and Redmi 13 5G. Its sub-brand POCO registered an 8 per cent YoY growth in shipments.

Oppo came fourth on the list with a 13 per cent share, accounting for the highest 33 per cent YoY growth in shipments. Its spinoff Realme saw a 15 per cent YoY decrease in shipments to land the fifth position on the chart with a 12 per cent share. Nothing, which is the latest entrant to the smartphone market, showed an "impressive growth" of roughly 646 per cent, while Motorola witnessed a 74 per cent growth.

“Looking ahead, the mobile handset market in India is expected to maintain steady growth. As brands focus on bridging technology gaps and introducing affordable 5G devices, the competition will likely intensify. The new wave of AI-capable devices will continue to fuel consumer preferences in the coming quarters," said Pankaj Jadli, Analyst-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CyberMedia Research (CMR).
