All Realme Phones To Get Android Pie-based ColorOS 6 In June

All Realme phones will get Android 9 Pie-based ColorOS 6 in June, Realme notes in an official blog post. More specifically, the Android 9 Pie-based ColorOS 6 update will be rolled out for the  Realme 1, 2, 2 Pro, C1, and U1 phones in June – the recently launched Realme 3 phone ships with ColorOS out-of-the-box.

The ColorOS 6 update brings an all-new ‘borderless’ design and newer fonts, but its ability to allow users to switch to an app drawer interface will invariably be its most talked-about feature in the days to come – Oppo and Realme say the feature was seemingly requested by many users.

Based on my time with the Realme 3 I can say this - the software is surely cleaner and more efficient from the one found in past Oppo/Realme phones that were simply a cornucopia of unnecessary settings and features.

Chinese brands are notorious for taking insane amounts of inspiration from the iPhone. Particularly on the side of software. Much like how it is in iOS, a large chunk of Android-based custom ROMs coming from China feature a springboard of apps (and widgets) on the home screen. This means all your apps (and widgets) lie on the home screen itself, in short, it becomes a chaotic affair if someone uses too many apps. Not to mention, the all-round look and feel of your smartphone home screen goes for a toss.

There has been a growing demand from users that brands let them opt for an app drawer, in the in-house ROM itself. Brands are now paying heed to this growing demand, and some of them have started to work on bringing a dedicated app drawer to their devices. Huawei is a classic example and because Honor makes do of the same software, even its phones now let you manually opt for an app drawer. Xiaomi’s Poco launcher, that made its debut on the Poco F1, is now available for MIUI-based devices just so users can opt for its app drawer approach. So on, and so forth.

Oppo has also joined the bandwagon now with its ColorOS 6 update and because Oppo and its sub-brand Realme share the same software, even Realme devices will be benefited from this. The default mode will still be iOS-like though.
