Folks over at OnePlus already confirmed that they have plans to announce a first 5G smartphone in 2019. Are you already expecting a 5G enabled OnePlus7? Well, don't! As opposed to what was being speculated till now, OnePlus 7 may not be the company's first 5G smartphone to support 5G. In an interview with CNET, a spokesperson of OnePlus revealed that OnePlus 6T successor (supposedly OnePlus 7) will not support 5G. OnePlus’s spokesperson also suggested that the company’s upcoming 5G phone would be a part of the separate series.

OnePlus’s flagship smartphone line-up is better known for its affordable status. Even though OnePlus phones are costing significantly higher with each release the brand is still in a comfortable space looking at other premium phones. A report has it that introducing a 5G smartphone in the form of a OnePlus 6T successor will have a significant impact on its affordability, further affecting the company’s value-for-money proposition to some extent. Hence, it makes sense for the company to focus on a separate, independent line-up of 5G phones.

It should be noted that OnePlus is yet to reveal anything concrete as to what its upcoming flagship smartphone would be called at the time of its launch. Towards the end of last month, OnePlus globally unveiled its current flagship smartphone: OnePlus 6T. No matter what, the upcoming OnePlus flagship is expected to come as a noteworthy upgrade over OnePlus 6T. The all-new OnePlus 6T is no way a major upgrade over its predecessor.

Both OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T have more or less similar offerings such as processing hardware and camera specifications. Much like OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T is powered by Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 845 chipset. But there are few obvious differences as well. OnePlus 6T has waterdrop notch and the in-display fingerprint reader to offer, which is something that can be perceived as an upgrade over OnePlus 6.
