The Sovereign Military Order of Malta, often referred to as the ‘Knights of Malta’, holds the distinction of being one of the rarest passport issuers in the world. This unique entity, recognized as a sovereign nation with observer status at the United Nations, operates without any land ownership but possesses its own currency, stamps, and passports.
When did the 'Knights of Malta' passport took birth?
Originating as a chivalric religious order around 1099 in Jerusalem, the Knights were granted the Maltese archipelago by the King of Spain in 1530. However, their rule was interrupted in 1798 when Napoleon Bonaparte expelled them. Today, the Order is headquartered in Rome and is actively involved in humanitarian efforts, providing aid in refugee camps and disaster-stricken areas across more than 120 countries.
The Knights of Malta first began issuing passports in the 1300s for their diplomats, which served as official documents during international travel. Presently, approximately 500 of these striking crimson passports are in circulation among Sovereign Council members and their families, specifically for diplomatic missions.
What stylistic changes have been made to this passport?
The modern passport is elegantly designed, featuring gold lettering that reads “Ordre Souverain Militaire de Malte” and a crest on the cover. Inside, its 44 pages are adorned with a watermark of the Maltese cross, symbolizing the Order’s rich heritage.
Passports are issued to government members for their term, typically lasting four years. The Grand Master’s passport holds the longest validity, reflecting their elected tenure of up to ten years.
Special passports
Other notable rare passports include those from Vatican City, known for their red covers, which highlight its sovereign status. Additionally, various countries issue diplomatic passports to select officials, granting them exemptions from certain visa requirements and legal protections during travel.
