The beloved 'Train of Lights' has made a triumphant return for 2024, promising to dazzle passengers with spectacular visual effects as it traverses Victoria’s picturesque Dandenong region. Running daily at 6 pm until July 21st, this 2.5-hour round trip offers an enchanting evening filled with moving lights, varying hues in display that form mesmerizing patterns.

Starting at Lakeside Station, the journey takes passengers to Gembrook and back. As dusk falls and the chilly winter air sets in, the steam train transforms into a magical display, lighting up the historic narrow-gauge track. Passengers can enjoy the stunning visuals from the comfort of open-side carriages, making for a truly immersive experience.

Despite the excitement surrounding the event, Visit Melbourne has confirmed that tickets for this year are completely sold out. This underscores the immense popularity and demand for the Train of Lights, a testament to its unique charm and appeal.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Rotary Club of Emerald and District will be hosting a sizzling sausage sizzle. All proceeds from this culinary delight will go directly to the club. Additionally, passengers can enjoy a variety of hot and cold beverages and snacks available at Gembrook Station during the journey’s interlude, as noted by the Puffing Billy Railway.

Dining choices

For those looking to grab a bite before embarking on their illuminated adventure, the Lakeside Visitor Centre offers a perfect prelude. Open from 9 am to 6 pm, the Railway Cafe will extend its hours, serving a full menu from 3.15 pm to 5.30 pm.

Be winter ready

The Train of Lights runs regardless of weather conditions. Given the cold temperatures at night, especially in open-side carriages, passengers are advised to dress warmly and prepare for inclement weather to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

This year's Train of Lights promises an unforgettable blend of scenic beauty and captivating light displays, making it a must-see event in Victoria’s winter calendar.
