Despite all the grand, towering buildings in bustling cities offering an array of apparel, food, and activities, nothing quite compares to the experience of shopping in a vintage market. Fortunately, a few historical markets still exist, and stepping into these bazaars will transport you back in time.

Keep scrolling to discover some of the oldest markets in India.

New Market in Kolkata

Established during the Victorian era in 1874, New Market in Kolkata was originally created to serve the British elite. While it is now a popular destination for both locals and tourists from around the world, it was once accessible only to high-ranking individuals.

Much like Chandni Chowk in Delhi, New Market in Kolkata offers everything you might need, from apparel and food to toys and electrical appliances. If you visit the market complex which is situated on Lindsay Street at Dharmatala, don’t forget to stop by Nahoum's and Sons, a bakery that has been delighting Kolkatans with its decadent plum cakes and rum balls for the past 120 years.

Chandni Chowk in Delhi

Chandni Chowk was established in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan’s daughter, Jahanara. The market’s name, which means "Moonlight Square," comes from a pool in the center of its square-shaped bazaar that reflected the moonlight, giving the bazaar its distinctive name.

This Mughal era bazaar is famous for its silver merchants, food, local textiles, and spices. To this day locals and visitors from across the globe rave about the quality and reasonable price of goods.

Attar Bazaar, Kannauj

If you’re a connoisseur of fine scents, the Attar Bazaar in Kannauj will captivate you. Known as India’s perfume capital, Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh is famous for its centuries-old tradition of distilling perfumes. Whether you choose from the wide selection or opt for a custom blend, the expert perfumers here will not disappoint with their aromatic concoctions.
