The highly anticipated trial of the medical staff who treated the late Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has commenced in Buenos Aires. Maradona passed away from a heart attack at his home in 2020 at the age of 60, while recovering from surgery for a brain blood clot earlier that month. Prosecutors claim that his death could have been prevented and accuse the medical team of negligence. The defendants, however, argue that Maradona had declined further treatment and should have stayed in the hospital longer after his surgery. If convicted of "homicide with possible intent," they face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.
