Gen Z Redefines Workplace Priorities: Career Growth and Work-Life Balance Take Center Stage
Gen Z prioritizes career growth, work-life balance, and job satisfaction over salary, while employers need to adapt to evolving expectations.
A recent report titled "Gen Z at Workplace", based on a survey of over 5,350 Gen Z professionals and 500 HR professionals, has shed light on the concerns and priorities of the youngest generation in the workforce. Conducted by Unstop, a talent engagement and hiring platform, the survey revealed that 51% of Gen Z professionals fear losing their jobs, while 40% are anxious about finding positions in their desired fields as they enter the job market.
Despite these worries, the report highlighted that Gen Z professionals are clear about what they want in their careers. "77 pc of the respondents prioritise the role or brand over commercials, with 43 pc specifically seeking hands-on experience and growth opportunities. This focus on professional development is further emphasised by the fact that 72 pc of Gen Zs consider job satisfaction more important than salary," the report stated.
The survey also pointed out a notable disconnect between what motivates Gen Z professionals and HR professionals' perceptions of their motivations. While 78% of Gen Z respondents cited career growth as the primary reason for switching jobs, 71% of HR professionals believed that better pay was the driving factor. However, only 25% of Gen Z professionals actually prioritized money as their main reason for job change.
"Work-life balance is one of the crucial factors to consider in any job for Gen Zs, with 47 pc of them citing this as a key element when evaluating potential employers. Their ideal workday involves completing routine tasks efficiently, leaving room for skill-building and productivity without feeling overwhelmed," the report added.
In addition to work-life balance, the report emphasized that Gen Z professionals seek opportunities for career progression and value a supportive company culture. "While 44 pc of recruiters believe Gen Z values company culture more than career progression, the reality is more nuanced. Gen Z seeks a balance of both, with a strong emphasis on opportunities for personal and professional development," the report highlighted.
The study also explored other important areas, including Gen Z’s expectations around mental health support, their flexible work style, and their top concerns while entering the job market.
Ankit Aggarwal, Founder and CEO of Unstop, emphasized the need for employers to adapt to the evolving expectations of Gen Z employees. "They (Gen Z) are reminding us that work should be a part of life, and not the other way around... It's a call to action for employers and recruiters. Those employers who adapt to these fast-changing expectations will be preferred by the new generation of employees," he said.
With Gen Z rapidly entering the workforce, companies will need to embrace these shifting priorities to attract and retain top talent.
