The Gojar, a rare species of snakehead fish was recently rescued in West Bengal.
Many animals and species have already become extinct. Extinction means that every member of a species, whether plant, animal, or other organism, has died out. A few species of snakehead fish are now nearing extinction as well.
Gojar: The Rare Snakehead Fish
A large snakehead fish was rescued from a pond in Malda town, West Bengal. This rare fish species, with its striking deep black stripes, is unusual for the area. Known locally as Gojar, it is typically found in Bangladesh . The fish, which weighed around 10 kg, was discovered at the Sagardighi Fish Breeding Center in Malda.
The weight of the fish was about 10 kg. Fishermen said that it is currently sold in the market at Rs 400 to 500 per kg.
Channa Marulius or Bullseye snakehead has been assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2009. The fish have dorsal and anal fins, which are long, and there are no spines or rays. These fish are native to most of Southeast Asia. They are highly adaptable and can tolerate a wide range of water conditions.
The lifespan of the fish varies depending on various factors, like environmental conditions and fishing pressure. These typically have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years in their native habitats.
