After US President Joe Biden dropped out of the race for the White House on Sunday after ending his candidacy for reelection, he later endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new nominee of the Democratic Party. In his letter, Biden said he is acting in the “best interest of my party and the country” and wants to focus on fulfilling his duties as president for the remaining time.

Democrats all over showed their support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy for the President seat. But in all these posts, there was one thing that was common and unusual: the coconuts.

The United States Senator for Hawaii, Brian Schatz, posted a picture of him climbing a coconut tree and wrote, “Madam Vice President, we are ready to help.”

The Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, shared his signed statement with a coconut emoji, a coconut tree, and an American flag.

A few days ago, Kamala Harris visited North Carolina, where the Democrats are targeting heavily, and met the supporters. North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Andersom Clayton, who is also the youngest state party chair in the US, shared her post on X and wrote, “we all fell out of the coconut tree today into a gym full of democrats!!!!” with coconut emoji. (The North Carolina Democratic Party delegates voted in sync to back Kamala Harris on Sunday.)

The Reason Behind Using Coconuts:

The remarks from Harris originated during the swearing-in ceremony for commissioners of the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics last May. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of supporting young people by also assisting "their parents and their grandparents and their teachers and their communities," highlighting that "none of us just live in a silo."

Harris then shared a memory of her childhood and how her mother used to scold them, saying, "My mother used to give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’ You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you."

This coconut and some other stories have gone viral on social media, mostly among young people, which is one of the key areas Democrats want to target, and they are worried that the youngsters might not root for Biden because of his age.
