Chennai faces severe flooding after heavy rainfall, while a Taj hotel waives charges for a guest, gaining widespread praise.
Heavy rainfall over the past two days has triggered severe flooding across southern India, with Chennai facing some of the worst effects. The downpour has caused major disruptions, leading to the closure of schools and colleges, frequent power outages, and massive traffic jams as waterlogged roads brought the city to a near standstill.
Amidst the flooding, a notable act of kindness from a prominent hotel chain has gone viral on social media. The Taj hotel in Chennai earned widespread praise after it waived charges for a guest who decided to cut short his trip due to the severe weather.
D Prasanth Nair, who was staying at the hotel, shared his experience on the social media platform X. He expressed appreciation for the Tata Group-owned hospitality chain and compared it favourably to another major Indian hotel chain.
According to Nair, he and a colleague were visiting Chennai when the rain began. Nair was staying at a Taj property, while his colleague had booked with another well-known Indian chain, referred to only as “H.” The pair initially planned to leave Chennai on October 16 but, due to the worsening weather, decided to depart a day earlier, on October 15.

Nair was surprised when the Taj hotel waived the charge for the additional night, understanding the difficult circumstances behind the change in plans. In contrast, his colleague’s hotel still charged for both the 15th and 16th despite the flooding.
“H” charged my colleague for both days. To my surprise, Taj charged me for only one day. The front office executive mentioned that they understand the reason for the change. That's why Taj is Taj,” Nair wrote on X, adding praise for the “Tata culture.”
The story has garnered attention on social media, with users praising the Taj Group for its compassion in the face of challenging conditions.
