The incidents of non-locals facing racism in Karnataka are not a new case now; we have a new case every other day in the news. But now a video has been shared on the internet that shows the case of harassment now not only to the user but also to the driver whose bike he has booked with the Uber app.
Thomas Simte recorded and shared the video in which the local rickshaw owners were harassing and pulling his backpack and asking him to cancel the ride. Thomas was continuously saying, “why are you harassing this person? Let me go, if people want to take an Uber, they will take Uber; if people want to take an auto, they will take auto; if you want to go to the police station, it's right here.”
And in the background, the local auto rickshaw driver was repeatedly asking him to cancel the booking. And one of them was coming forward to slap Thomas, and at the end someone slapped his camera.
The video was shared on X with a caption that reads, “Getting harassed if we take @Uber_India bikes or Auto instead of the regular rickshaw. This happened to me in Indiranagar Metro station.” And he also tagged the handles of Bangalore Police with Uber support, Uber support India, and Uber Bangalore.
He also wrote, “I am not exaggerating when I say this happens everyday to these riders. He pulled my bag from behind to get me down the bike.
I want strict action against this harassment of passengers and of riders if they take Uber or any other mode of transport other than the bystanders.”
Later, the official handle of Bengaluru Police replied under his tweet and said, “Please share your contact number via DM. In case of distress/ emergency situation, dial #Namma 112.”
People in the comment section also shared their reactions to the incident.
One of the users said, "The greedy and aggressive behaviour of autorickshaw drivers is one of the main reasons why commuters opt for cab apps. No one likes their sense of entitlement or feel safe in the vehicles of these ‘local’ drivers.”
A second user said, “What’s happening in Bengaluru? Have the locals decided to take a regressive path??? Wake up before it’s too late !!”
“There is complete lawlessness in the street. Hardly see any police patrol and everyday such ruckus happens. You end up paying 50% taxes for 3rd world infrastructure and administrative services.”
Another one said, “Believe it or not of all the lovely 5 South Indian States - unfortunately Karnataka law and order is worst. Please don’t become another rowdy state, we have plenty elsewhere.”
One local user said, “Even we the kannadigas also scare to blore auto drivers! Wednesday ola auto driver was saying there is an issue in the app so it showing less estimation tough I'm an engineer I said "Anna namige hinge ina bereyavrige innhenge"
(For us only like what abt for others).”
“Rapido and uber driver often call and tell us to stand fee meters behind the auto stand to save them from harassment this has been seen from previous 2-3 years even i have experienced it twice,” said another user.
