Viral Fame Turns Dangerous for Baby Pygmy Hippopotamus in Thailand
Baby pygmy hippo Moo-Deng faces mistreatment from overzealous fans at a Thai zoo, prompting increased security and legal threats.
Moo-Deng, a two-month-old baby pygmy hippopotamus at Thailand's Khao Kheow Open Zoo, has taken the internet by storm. Loved by millions across the globe, she’s become a viral sensation, garnering fans from around the world on social media platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram. While her newfound fame has brought joy to many, it has also come with unexpected and troubling consequences.
The adorable hippo, born in July, has doubled zoo attendance near Pattaya, thanks to her celebrity status. However, some visitors, eager for her attention, have resorted to extreme measures, leading to concerning behavior. Videos have surfaced online showing tourists throwing objects at Moo-Deng and even pouring water on her while she sleeps.
Zookeeper Atthapon Nundee never anticipated Moo-Deng's fame would spread beyond Thailand.
“The moment I saw Moo-Deng born, I set a goal to make her famous, but I never expected it would spread abroad. I thought she could be famous in Thailand but not internationally,” Nundee was quoted as saying by a UK Daily.
Unfortunately, not all attention has been positive. Some visitors’ behavior has crossed a line, with the zoo forced to step in and protect its beloved resident. "These behaviours are not only cruel but also dangerous," said Narongwit Chodchoi, the zoo's director, in an official statement. "We must protect these animals and ensure that they have a safe and comfortable environment."
Baby Pygmy Hippopotamus Faces Harrasment by the Visitors
To combat the issue, the zoo has increased security around Moo-Deng's enclosure, installing CCTV cameras and threatening legal action against those mistreating her. The zoo has also issued a plea to visitors, encouraging them to come when the baby hippo is naturally awake and active.
Moo-Deng’s story highlights the darker side of viral fame, where even innocent animals can suffer from overzealous attention. While millions are charmed by her online videos, it’s important to remember that she is still a baby in need of care, respect, and protection.
For those hoping to visit this internet sensation, remember to treat Moo-Deng with kindness, and appreciate her from a safe and respectful distance.
