Viral News: Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata, who was a part of NASA's Expedition 68 mission to the International Space Station, shared footage of himself showcasing his solo baseball skills in space.
Wakata shared the video footage of him playing baseball, as the Major League Baseball (MLB) season got underway in Tokyo last week.
“It's baseball season - the MLB season opener is kicking off in Japan. During Expedition 68 I played a solo game of baseball. In microgravity you don't need a whole team, you can play all of the positions!” Japanese Astronaut posted on X.
The video has gone viral on the social media platforms.
Reacting on the post, Canadian retired astronaut Chris Hadfield said, “That's friend Koichi Wakata inside the JAXA module of the International Space Station - Japan plays great baseball!”
Netizens appreciated the skills displayed by the astronaut. “A lot of people can throw fastballs, but very few can throw that slowball”.
Another wrote, that a game should be launched by the name Spaceball. “Seems fun! is there such a game that could be called spaceball? if humanity were to migrate to space at one point what kinda sports would ppl bring/create w (do we have a good amount of data to just begin to imagine idk) just a random thought”.
Wakata was a part of Expedition 68 crew which studied cardiovascular health and explored 3D printing knee cartilage and cardiac tissue samples. The expedition commenced with the launch of Soyuz MS-21 on September 29, 2022.
The astronauts also grew red dwarf tomatoes and observed liquid behavior in artificial gravity to support missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Other members of the mission were Sergey Prokopyev, Commander; Dmitri Petelin, Flight Engineer; Frank Rubio, Flight Engineer; Nicole Mann, Flight Engineer; Josh Cassada, Flight Engineer; Anna Kikina, Flight Engineer.
