World Alzheimer’s Day: World Alzheimer’s Day is observed on September 21 every year to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

What is Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases.

Alzheimer's disease symptoms include memory loss, cognitive decline, and changes in behavior. Memory-related symptoms involve forgetting recent events, names, or words, and difficulty learning new information. Cognitive symptoms include trouble with problem-solving, decision-making, and judgment.

Theme of World Alzheimer's Day:

In 2024, on this day we will focus on the theme of “A World of Care.” This theme highlights the importance of support for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

History of World Alzheimer's Day:

World Alzheimer's Day was first established in 1994, initiated by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI). The day coincides with the anniversary of the discovery of Alzheimer's disease by Alois Alzheimer in 1906.

Significance of World Alzheimer's Day:

Alzheimer's disease affects over 55 million people worldwide, with numbers expected to triple by 2050. This neurological disorder causes memory loss, cognitive decline, and changes in behavior.

World Alzheimer's Day aims to:

1. Raise awareness about Alzheimer's symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options.
2. Reduce stigma surrounding dementia and promote inclusivity.
3. Support research for better treatments and potential cures.
4. Encourage governments to prioritize dementia care and services.
