SpaceX's Crew-10 mission has successfully docked at the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday, bringing hope for the return of two NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been stuck in orbit for months.

After the hatch of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft opened, the members of Crew-10 were warmly welcomed by the Expedition 72 crew, including the stranded astronauts, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore.

The space capsule, launched on Friday, 14 March, from Texas, arrived at the ISS at 12:05 a.m. EST (9:35 a.m. IST).

SpaceX's Dragon capsule took about 28.5 hours to travel from Earth to the ISS. The spacecraft carried four astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers from NASA, Takuya Onishi from Japan's JAXA, and Kirill Peskov from Russia's Roscosmos.

They will spend the next few days familiarising themselves with the ISS alongside NASA astronauts Williams and Wilmore.

Williams and Wilmore have been stranded on the ISS since June 2024 due to technical issues with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. Their return was scheduled after an eight-day mission, but persistent problems delayed their journey home.

Sunita Williams amongst first astronauts ever to be rescued from space accident' says Mayank Vahia

In an interview with PTI, retired professor in space physics at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mayank Vahia says, “... Sunita Williams is amongst the first astronauts ever to be rescued from a space accident. The space capsule, which took them nine months ago, had too many problems… What saved Sunita Williams is that there was a space station where they could sit, because the vehicle that went up took them there, which was supported to bring them back, had problems, that vehicle has to be brought back empty. NASA has to prepare another vehicle. Four astronauts went up in that vehicle. They will replace astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmor (at the ISS).”
