Australia: Record number of COVID jabs given

A record 310,000 COVID-19 vaccinations were administered across Australia on Friday.

This brought the total vaccine doses administered in the country to more than 16 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Australia's Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Michael Kidd said more than 9 million doses of vaccine had been administered through Australia's primary care system.

Speaking at a news conference in Sydney, Kidd paid tribute to the "tens of thousands of Australians are fronting up to work every day alongside our state and territory colleagues in the (vaccination) hubs to play their part in protecting the people of our nation during this pandemic."

In total, 55% of Australians aged over 70 are now fully-vaccinated, while the figure for people over 50 is around 40% fully vaccinated.
