Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Tuesday the approval by Australian health authorities of a second vaccine to be used in the fight against COVID-19.

"The vaccine has met requirements for standards for safety, quality and efficacy, and will be provided free to Australians," he said.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is the second one to be approved in Australia after the Pfizer vaccine was approved last month.

Morrison said the initial supplies of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be imported from overseas, but the vaccine will be produced in Australia in coming months.
