Beirut: Israel has launched a surprise attack on Lebanon's capital Beirut, targeting the southern suburbs of Dahyieh, specifically the Hadath area. The latest attack is notably the first Israeli aggression in the area since the ceasefire ended the latest Israel-Hezbollah war in November. The Israeli enemy launched airstrikes on residential buildings in the Hadath area, causing massive damage and destruction. Reports indicated multiple raids were carried out around neighborhoods, including Al-Hadath, Burj Al-Barajneh, and Haret Hreik, with smoke billowing over the area.
Officials stated that the attack, which occurred on Friday, marked the first Israeli aggression in the Lebanese capital since the November ceasefire. Despite the ceasefire deal, Israel has continued its offensive, striking targets in southern Lebanon and vowing to retaliate against strikes launched from Lebanon into northern Israel.
The local media reported four airstrikes hitting the Al-Hadath area, with images and footage shared on social media revealing the extent of the destruction. The attack was carried out by Israeli F-35 warplanes, firing two missiles at an apartment in Jamous.
The recent escalation comes after a period of relative calm in the region. The Israeli occupation forces have been renewing their bombardment of Beirut's southern suburbs, targeting multiple residential areas across Lebanon.
The Israeli military had issued an evacuation warning for a building in the area, prompting residents to flee in panic. The people scrambled to escape by car and on foot, causing traffic congestion as fear swept through the neighborhood. According to reports, a loud boom was heard in Beirut, and smoke was seen rising from the area that Israel's military had vowed to strike.
Disturbing images and videos have surfaced, showcasing the aftermath of the airstrikes.
Israel's defence minister has vowed to continue attacks, stating that if there is no peace in Israel's northern communities, there will be no peace in Beirut either. Hezbollah has denied reports of firing rockets at northern Israel, accusing Israel of seeking a pretext to continue attacking Lebanon. The Israeli military has carried out dozens of airstrikes on southern and eastern Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah, while continuing drone attacks that have killed several members of the militant group.
The airstrikes have resulted in massive damage to civilian and religious sites, including the vicinity of Our Lady of Salvation Church near Saint George Hospital and a 12-story residential building near the Mar Michael Church. The Lebanese government has ordered the closure of all schools and universities in Beirut's southern suburb of Hadath for the day, in response to the escalating violence.
The Israel-Hezbollah conflict escalated into an all-out war in September, with Israel conducting waves of airstrikes that killed most of the militant group's senior leaders. The fighting has claimed over 4,000 lives in Lebanon and displaced around 60,000 Israelis. Under the ceasefire deal, Israeli forces were expected to withdraw from all Lebanese territory by late January. However, the deadline was extended to February 18, yet Israel has remained in five locations in Lebanon near northern Israeli communities.
