Stockholm: The recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry are David Baker, Demis Hassabis, John M. Jumper, as announced by Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Wednesday.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker 'for computational protein design' and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper 'for protein structure prediction.'

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is one of the five original Nobel Prizes established by the will of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite.

It is awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to the field of chemistry.

The prize recognizes discoveries or improvements that have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind in the field of chemistry. Some notable recent winners include Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Aleksey Yekimov in 2023 for their work on quantum dots.

The awards continue with the literature prize on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced Friday and the economics award on Oct. 14.

Six days of Nobel announcements opened Monday with Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun winning the medicine prize. Two founding fathers of machine learning — John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton — won the physics prize.

The prize carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million) from a bequest left by the award’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. The laureates are invited to receive their awards at ceremonies on Dec. 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Aleksey Yekimov for their work on quantum dots.
