Earthquake of Magnitude 6.2 Jolts Indonesia's Sumatra Island

Jakarta: A massive earthquake of magnitude 6.2 at the Richter scale on Tuesday hit Indonesia's Sumatra Island. As the earthquake jolted the island, the tremors were felt at the far end of the island country as well. The local authorities have claimed that though the tremors are high in Richter scale, there is no risk of Tsunami in the country.

According to the BMKG of Indonesia, the country's premier agency for meteorology, informed that the epicenter of the quake was at a depth of 12 kilometre in the region.

The Indonesian agency, however, has denied any risk of Tsunami in the country and stated that no loss of life and property has been reported after the incident so far.

The island country has been witnessing several earthquakes in recent times.

Earlier on April 28, a strong magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook the southern part of Indonesia's Java island. There was however, no report of injury or property damage after the incident. As per the US Geological Survey, the quake had struck 102 kilometers south of Banjar city at a depth of 68.3 kilometers.

As per reports, high-rise buildings in the country's capital of Jakarta swayed for around a minute and two-story homes shook strongly in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung and in Jakarta's satellite cities of Depok, Tangerang, Bogor and Bekasi.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval as the country is located on major geological faults known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
