Greta Thunberg Detained in Denmark's Copenhagen During Gaza War Protest
Greta Thunberg, a popular climate activist was detained by Danish police at a Copenhagen protest against the war in Gaza.
Environmental activist Greta Thunberg was arrested on Wednesday during a protest against the Gaza conflict at the University of Copenhagen. According to a spokesperson for the student group organizing the demonstration, "Students against the Occupation," Thunberg was among six individuals detained after approximately 20 protestors blocked access to a university building and three entered the premises.
Local media outlet Ekstra Bladet published images showing Thunberg, draped in a black-and-white keffiyeh shawl, being escorted by police. The group, which was advocating for a boycott of Israeli universities, claimed responsibility for entering the rector's office to demand institutional action against collaborations with Israeli institutions.
In a statement on Instagram, "Students against the Occupation" accused the University of Copenhagen of contributing to what they described as "genocide" through its cooperation with Israeli universities. The group's protest aimed to spotlight what they see as a complicity in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
While police have not officially confirmed the identities of those arrested, "Students against the Occupation" has identified Thunberg, a prominent climate activist, as one of the detainees.
The Gaza conflict has intensified since Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, leading to significant casualties and widespread destruction.
According to recent reports from international organizations, Israeli military operations have resulted in extensive damage to Gaza's infrastructure, including homes, healthcare facilities, schools, and commercial buildings.
