Berlin: A man went on a rampage onboard a high-speed train in Germany, leaving four people injured after the accused allegedly attacked passengers with an axe and a hammer. The incident occurred on the ICE 91 train heading towards Austria's capital city, Vienna. The incident occurred at around 1.55 pm local time, has led to a chaotic situation at the railway stations in Germany.
According to reports, the attacker, believed to be a Syrian national, was armed with an axe and a hammer. It is claimed that some passengers pulled the train's emergency brake, bringing it to a halt, while one passenger reportedly stole one of the weapons to stop the attacker. The Bavarian Red Cross confirmed that one person suffered serious injuries, three others were moderately injured, and one was slightly injured.
The police and the fire service were quickly deployed to the scene. As per reports, the alleged attacker was seriously injured and flown to the hospital by helicopter. The Bavarian Red Cross spokesman, Sohrab Taheri-Sohi, described the incident as a violent incident that prompted a major emergency response.
The eyewitnesses stated that the bravery of one passenger who stole one of the weapons from the attacker was praised.
A spokesman for Deutsche Bahn, the German train company, expressed sympathy for the injured and those affected by the incident. "Our thoughts and sympathy are with the injured and all those who now have to come to terms with what they have experienced. We wish all those affected a speedy and full recovery."
The police are currently investigating the incident, and a spokesman confirmed that the attacker had injured several people with dangerous objects shortly before Straßkirchen.
The motive behind the attack is still unclear.
