Mary Simon is officially Canada's 30th Governor General, and the first Indigenous person to hold the role.

At her installation on Monday, Simon said she is honored to accept this call to service and promises to meet with Canadians all across the country to learn what people are facing and what could be done to make their lives better.

A First Nations drumming circle greeted Simon as she arrived at the Senate for the ceremony.

As she took her seat at the head of the Senate chamber, her husband, Whit Fraser, turned to her, took a small bow and then sat down next to Simon.

Simon's appointment earlier this month came amid a national reckoning with the country's historical mistreatment of Indigenous Peoples, including discoveries of unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools
