Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday extended his greetings on the occasion of the Navratri and wished “Happy Navratri!” to the Hindu community living in his country. Notably, his wishes came amid the ongoing diplomatic row between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Taking to his official X handle, the Canadian Prime Minister wrote, “Happy Navratri! I’m sending my warmest wishes to members of the Hindu community and all those who are celebrating this festival.”

“Navratri is one of the most important and sacred festivals in the Hindu faith, commemorating the victory of the goddess Durga over the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura and the triumph of good over evil. Often seen as a celebration of feminine energy, it is a time for friends and family to come together and honour century-old traditions with prayers, joyous performances, special meals, and fireworks,” the official statement released by the Prime Minister read.
Recognising the efforts of Indian community in the growth of Canada, Trudeau said, “For all Canadians, Navratri also offers an opportunity to learn more about the rich history and culture of Hindu communities and to recognise their invaluable contributions to Canada’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. Today’s celebrations remind us that diversity is one of Canada’s greatest strengths.”

Diplomatic row between India and Canada
The tensions between the two countries escalated after Trudeau publicly alleged the link of Indian agents in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in a Vancouver suburb in June this year.
However, India rejected Trudeau’s claims and termed them 'absurd' and 'motivated'. "We reject the statement of the Canadian Prime Minister in their Parliament, as also the statement by their Foreign Minister. Allegations of the Government of India's involvement in any act of violence in Canada are absurd and motivated…” the Ministry of External Affairs said.
