Hairdressers and nail salons were among businesses allowed to reopen in Greece on Monday, as the country's coronavirus lockdown was partially eased.

The move comes despite an ongoing surge in daily infections and as other shops and services remain shut.

Coronavirus regulations inside these premises are being kept strict, with staff and customers required to wear masks and the number of clients allowed inside at any one time limited according to the store's size.

Hairdresser Christos Nikolaou, who owns a hair and nail salon in a residential neighbourhood near the centre of the capital, says opening up when cases are so high means they shouldn't have been shut in the first place.

Bookings are coming in fast, with many salons already fully booked until the end of the month.

Greece has been experiencing a renewed surge of COVID-19 despite lockdown-related measures being in force since early November, with dozens of daily deaths recorded, as well as increasing numbers of patients hospitalized in intensive care units.

About 500 people are hospitalised each day across the country with COVID-19, health authorities say, with 200 of them being in the wider Athens region.

On Monday Greece’s health minister announced requisitioning the services of private sector doctors from certain specialties in the wider Athens region to help fight a renewed surge in coronavirus infections that is straining hospitals to their limits.
