French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs, saying it is not in line with Trump's own push for European nations to increase defense spending. Speaking at a press conference after the Paris summit, Macron confirmed that he had personally expressed his concerns to Trump.
Macron warned that Europe must respond to the tariffs, emphasizing the uncertainty they create for businesses. He assured that France would work closely with the European Union to explore ways to protect key industries from the economic impact.
We will have to respond, Macron stated, adding that the French government is committed to shielding sectors that could suffer due to the new trade policies.
When asked about criticism from Steve Witkoff regarding proposals for European military forces, Macron downplayed the remarks, insisting that his focus remains on what Europe can do independently.
“We must hope for the best, but prepare for the worst,” he said, expressing optimism that the U.S. would join a European reassurance force but also stressing that Europe must be ready to act on its own if necessary.
Macron reaffirmed that the U.S. remains a “reliable” ally and praised Trump’s efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts. However, he acknowledged that there are times when French and American positions may differ, reiterating the importance of Europe being able to defend its own interests.
Macron revealed that he will be speaking with Trump again in the coming hours, particularly regarding the ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Russia. He indicated that Moscow’s response to the U.S. proposal will provide insight into Russia’s true intentions.
“If Russia doesn’t agree to the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire, that will give the U.S. an idea on what Moscow’s true position is,” Macron said.
Despite the tensions over trade and defense, the French president maintained a diplomatic stance, emphasizing the importance of strong transatlantic relations while making it clear that Europe will take steps to protect its economy.
