JD Vance’s ‘Stronger Doors And Windows’ in School Remark Stokes Controversy
Vance suggested that improving physical security measures, such as "stronger doors and windows," would be more effective than gun control measures.
During Tuesday’s debate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, running mate to Donald Trump , sparked controversy with his remarks on preventing school shootings. Vance suggested that improving physical security measures, such as "stronger doors and windows," would be more effective than gun control measures.
“We have to make the doors lock better, we have to make the windows stronger, and of course, we need to increase school resource officers,” Vance stated. He dismissed the idea of effectively removing guns from dangerous individuals, saying, “The idea that we can magically wave a wand and take guns out of the hands of bad guys doesn’t fit with recent experience.”
When pressed about holding parents of mass shooters accountable, Vance sidestepped a`` direct response, emphasizing that local law enforcement should make such decisions. “I think in some cases the answer is going to be ‘yes’ and in some cases the answer is going to be ‘no,’” he said.
Vance's comments drew significant backlash on social media, with many netizens expressing outrage. One user sarcastically noted, “Yeah. The schools in other countries are all armor plated, with bulletproof glass, I’m guessing… since they don’t have these problems there.” Another criticized the focus on gun rights over children’s safety, stating, “Imagine having a much cheaper and better solution, and ignoring it because guns are more important than kids.”
Further, one commenter lamented the Republican stance on school shootings, stating, “I can’t believe Republicans have just decided that school shootings are a fact of life. That’s it. They’re resigned to our kids dying.”
The debate, hosted by CBS, featured Vance going head-to-head with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in a vice presidential contest. Without the constraints of muted microphones, the candidates engaged in a more dynamic discussion. Vance, known for his aggressive style, has previously made headlines for controversial remarks, including derogatory comments about women.
