Mandalay: A massive earthquake of 7.7 magnitude has struck Myanmar today, leaving several buildings and bridges completely destroyed. So far, no loss of human life has been reported.
The Myanmar earthquake has caused strong tremors in the Thailand capital Bangkok and Manipur and the entire northeast region of India.
A massive earthquake of 7.7 magnitude has struck 10 kilometres from Mandalay in Myanmar, causing extensive damage to public property. Panicked locals have shared videos of the earthquake on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter).
The powerful earthquake has led to the collapse of the iconic Ava Bridge in Irrawaddy River in Mandalay; nerve-wrecking visuals have emerged.
The Greater Bangkok area, home to over 17 million people, includes many residents living in high-rise buildings. When the earthquake struck around 1:30 p.m., alarms rang throughout the buildings, prompting startled residents to evacuate down staircases of condominiums and hotels in the densely populated heart of Bangkok.
After the tremor, people gathered in the streets, seeking shelter from the intense midday heat. The quake was powerful enough to cause water to spill out of pools, even in high-rise buildings, as the tremor rattled through.
Some monasteries collapsed, and frightening images have surfaced online. A state of emergency has been declared in Bangkok as rail, metro and flight services are hit following the quakes.
While there has been a lot of damage of property, no injuries or loss of life has been reported so far.
