Calm returned Tuesday to the border area between Lebanon and Israel, a day after clashes and shelling were reported.

The Israeli military on Monday said it thwarted an infiltration attempt by Hezbollah militants - setting off one of the heaviest exchanges of fire along the frontier since a 2006 war between the bitter enemies.

Neither side reported casualties during a battle that raged for over an hour, and Hezbollah denied involvement.

Nasser Al-Qadiri, the mayor of the Lebanese village of Kfarchouba, where most of the shelling took place, said the shelling had killed many cattle and damaged their grazing land.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab warned Tuesday against an increase in tensions on the Lebanese border with Israel.
