Migrants unsuccessful at crossing into Greece

Migrants and refugees were searching for ways to enter Greece from Turkey, after Turkey announced on Thursday it was easing restrictions on those wishing to cross into Europe.

Greek authorities said they thwarted an attempt by about 1,000 people overnight to make their way across the Evros wetland area, at the southern end of the border.

Turkey's announcement upended its previous policy of containing refugees and other migrants under an agreement with the European Union, in which the EU would provide billions in funding for the care of refugees within Turkey.

The announcement marked a dramatic departure from the current policy and an apparent attempt to pressure the European Union, to help Ankara handle the fallout from the war in Syria.
