Pope Francis greeted a large crowd of pilgrims outside Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Sunday, marking his first public appearance in more than five weeks before being discharged. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been recovering from double pneumonia, stepped onto the balcony of his hospital room to address the faithful.

“Thank you to everyone,” he said, offering a brief blessing to those gathered below. Moments later, he left for Casa Santa Marta, his residence in Vatican City, where he will continue his recovery for at least two months.

A longrRoad to recovery

The Pope was admitted to Gemelli hospital on February 14 after suffering from a respiratory infection, which was later diagnosed as double pneumonia. His condition saw two critical breathing crises before doctors announced on March 10 that he was no longer in immediate danger.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, a general surgeon at Gemelli, told reporters on Saturday that while Francis’s health had improved significantly, his full recovery would take time. “It will still take a lot of time for his body to fully heal,” he explained.

A message of hope and patience

Before leaving the hospital, Pope Francis reflected on his time in medical care in his Sunday Angelus message.

“I have had the opportunity to experience the Lord’s patience, which I also see reflected in the tireless care of the doctors and healthcare workers, as well as in the care and hopes of the relatives of the sick,” he said. “This trusting patience, anchored in God’s unfailing love, is indeed necessary in our lives, especially when facing the most difficult and painful situations.”

Faithful celebrate his return

The Pope’s appearance was met with joy and relief from the crowd outside the hospital. “Our Pope is coming back,” one pilgrim told Rai News, reflecting the feelings of many who had gathered in support.

Now back at the Vatican, Pope Francis will rest and gradually resume his duties while closely monitoring his health.
