Washington: Donald Trump , the President-elect of the United States (US), has nominated Matthew Whitaker, a former Attorney General, as the US ambassador to NATO, also called the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Trump, while naming Whitaker as the ambassador to NATO, described him as a "strong warrior and loyal Patriot" who will advance and defend US interests, strengthen relationships with NATO allies, and stand firm against threats to peace and stability. Whitaker has been a strong supporter of Trump, who is set to take on one of the most prominent diplomatic roles during the President-elect's second term.
Notably, Whitaker served as Acting Attorney General in Trump's first administration and was a critic of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible ties between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia. Meanwhile, the fresh move is seen as a significant development in Trump's second administration, and Whitaker's nomination is expected to impact US foreign policy and national security.
‘Strong Warrior and a Loyal Patriot’: Trump Praises Whitaker
Experts suggested that during Trump’s first term, US relations with NATO were strained as the president repeatedly criticised the alliance, accusing European members of not contributing enough to defence spending. On the campaign trail this year, Trump continued to voice a tough stance, even suggesting in February that he would encourage Russia to invade NATO countries that failed to meet defence spending targets.
In a statement, Trump praised Whitaker as a "strong warrior" and a "loyal Patriot" who would prioritise US interests and strengthen relationships with NATO allies. He added that Whitaker would confront global threats with a commitment to "Peace and Stability," and maintain the "America First" approach that has defined his administration. "I am pleased to announce that former Acting Attorney General, Matthew G. Whitaker, from the Great State of Iowa, will be the United States Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Matt is a strong warrior and loyal Patriot, who will ensure the United States' interests are advanced and defended. Matt will strengthen relationships with our NATO Allies, and stand firm in the face of threats to Peace and Stability - He will put AMERICA FIRST," Trump said in a statement.

Whitaker previously served as acting attorney general for three months during Trump’s first term and has been an influential figure at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank focused on shaping policy for Trump's second term. Whitaker is known for his vocal opposition to the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and has consistently aligned himself with Trump’s legal and political agenda.
Trump has not offered detailed foreign policy plans for his second term, but his supporters argue that his "peace through strength" philosophy will help shape international relations and address ongoing global conflicts, including war in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Pertinently, Whitaker's nomination is consistent with Trump's broader pattern of selecting loyalists over those with specific subject-matter expertise. This contrasts with President Biden’s pick for the NATO ambassador role, Julianne Smith, who previously served as Biden's deputy national security adviser.
