New Delhi: Nearly four months after a significant exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) serving as mediator, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday called for a full and mutual exchange of all prisoners of war as the “start” of a broader peace process. Speaking at a summit in Kyiv marking the third anniversary of Russia's invasion, Zelenskyy said, "Russia must release Ukrainians. Ukraine is ready to exchange all for all, and this is a fair way to start."
In October 2024, Russia and Ukraine exchanged 95 prisoners of war each with the UAE. Before this, both countries released 103 prisoners from each side in September.
‘I Am Ready to Step Down if Necessary,’ Says Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy's announcement comes a day after he said he is willing to step down from his position if it meant securing peace for Ukraine, quipping that he could exchange his departure for Ukraine's entry into NATO.

“If it is absolutely necessary for me to leave my post, I am ready to do so,” he stated. “I can exchange it for NATO membership—if such conditions exist, then immediately, without prolonged discussions.”
Zelenskyy Wants US to be a True Ally
Zelenskyy expressed his desire to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump before Trump’s anticipated meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian leader also made it clear that he wants the U.S. to be a true ally rather than merely a mediator in negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow. “I really want it to be more than just mediation... that’s not enough,” Zelenskyy said during a press conference in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian president added, “I am focused on Ukraine’s security today and do not intend to remain in power for decades. That is probably my dream.”
‘Not Offended By Trump's Words’
Tensions between Zelenskyy and Trump have escalated in recent weeks, especially following high-level U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia.
Trump recently accused Zelenskyy of avoiding elections out of fear of losing and labeled him a “dictator without elections.” He also claimed that Zelenskyy’s main skill was manipulating Biden’s administration into spending billions on the war.
In response, Zelenskyy dismissed Trump’s remarks. “I am not offended by President Trump’s words that I am a dictator, because I am not. What matters is what the Ukrainian people think of me,” he said.
Zelenskyy also drew a contrast between himself and Putin, stating, “I am not going to rule Ukraine for tens of years, and I will not allow Putin, who has ruled for decades, to control parts of Ukraine.”
Despite their differences, Zelenskyy expressed hope for productive talks with Trump, emphasizing that U.S. security guarantees are “urgently needed.”
Trump Continues Bashing Zelenskyy
Meanwhile, Trump has continued his criticism of Zelenskyy, downplaying his role in resolving the conflict. He has repeatedly blamed the Ukrainian president for prolonging the war and accused him of exploiting U.S. support under the Biden administration.
