China sinkhole death toll climbs to 9, 1 missing

The death toll in a road collapse accident in the Chinese city of Xining climbed to nine on Wednesday, according to state media.

One person remains missing after a bus plunged into a sinkhole in a section of a road in Xining on Monday afternoon.

According to Xinhua, the accident left 17 people in the hospital.

Some 1,000 emergency workers and 30 vehicles were sent to the site, the emergency management bureau in the city said.

It said the bus had been raised from the collapsed 80-square metre (860-square foot) section of the road into which it had fallen.

The hilly city of Xining is the capital of Qinghai province, one of China's poorest regions that lies atop the Tibetan Plateau.
