77 years after it was stolen by the Nazis, a church bell is to be returned from the German town of Muenster to its original home in Sławięcice, Poland.

According to the local diocese, the 400-kilogram bell had stood unattended for decades in the courtyard of the church on Cathedral Square in Muenster.

Members of the parish of Saint Catherine of Alexandrien in Sławięcice went in search of the bell two years ago and discovered it.

Officially, the piece is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany but now the Ministry of the Interior in Berlin has given its approval, the bell, which dates from 1555, can make its way home to Poland once the coroanvirus pandemic allows.
