Mexican health officials are urging residents to get tested for COVID-19 amid concerns of a new wave of the infection following the Easter holiday period.

In recent days, some testing centres across the country have recorded an increase in the number of people checking if they are positive for COVID-19.

Doctor Sandrín Rivera, who is the Deputy Epidemiology Director of Mexico City's Cuauhtemoc borough, said on Wednesday that in recent days there has been an "increase of about 50 more tests per day" at some testing centres.

She said it was vital for residents to get tested now, more than a week since the Easter holiday period has passed, as it was the period of "time for us to see the impact of Easter on the health of the population."

Since the pandemic began, more than 2.2 million Mexicans have tested positive for COVID-19, with at least 210,000 confirmed deaths.
