Women in quarantine centres were being serenaded on Sunday to mark Mother's Day in El Salvador as the country remains in lockdown in order to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele announced a tightening of the country's lockdown beginning Thursday.

People are only allowed to go out to buy groceries twice a week and follow a certain order, determined by their national ID numbers.

On Sunday, a mariachi band turned up outside a hotel-turned-quarantine centre in the Antiguo Cuscatlan municipality to serenade women on Mother's Day who are being kept in isolation.

There is an estimated 4,000 people in similar quarantine centres.

El Salvador registered 889 confirmed cases and 17 deaths as of Sunday.
