Thousands of South Korean doctors gathered in Seoul on Friday to protest the government's latest decision to expand medical schools and increase the number of doctors.

South Korean Health and Welfare Ministry recently announced that it will add 4,000 doctors nationwide over the next ten years to resolve the shortage of medical personnel.

In a protest against the government's decision, members of the Korean Medical Association staged a nationwide strike on Friday, following the strike staged by medical residents last week.

Park Jeehyun, president of the Korean Medical Intern and Resident Association, called on the government to improve the South Korean healthcare system, rather than increase the number of doctors.
