Taiwan on Tuesday rejected allegations that it's been orchestrating the recent unrest in the Solomon Islands.

The claim was made by the Solomon Islands' pro-Beijing prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare.

Taiwanese foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou, addressing a news conference in Taipei, said the cause of the unrest was what she called Sogavare's "poor leadership and bad governance".

She said the allegation was "irresponsible".

"We call on the central government of the Solomon Islands to be sure to listen to the voices of the people, not to vainly attempt to govern the country and the people following China's arbitrary and authoritarian model," Ou said.

Sogavare survived a no-confidence vote on Monday after telling lawmakers he would not bow down to what he called "Taiwan's agents."
