As Ukraine seeks to control a resurgence of the coronavirus, Stryi Central City Hospital has been converted to exclusively treat COVID-19 patients.

In the hospital's intensive care unit, Dr. Oleh Hornostayev said on the day the number of worldwide deaths linked to the virus passed one million, his focus was closer to home.

"I know that I have patients in a very serious condition here and here. And I'm worried about them very much", Hornostayev said.

Nadiya Popaden was celebrating her 60th birthday inside the hospital, but after being "very sick" her condition was now improving.

Ukraine reported a further 3,627 virus cases on Tuesday, just short of its record daily total of 3,833 set on September 26.

As of Tuesday, the country has reported more than 200,000 infections and more than 4,000 deaths.
