STORYLINE:

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived in the city of Ceuta by helicopter on Tuesday to see firsthand the situation amid a mass migration crisis there.

Sanchez, accompanied by Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska flew over the Spanish enclave on the coast of Morocco, after thousands of migrants entered the city.

Earlier, Spain deployed its military to the area and expelled nearly half of the thousands of migrants who jumped fences or swam onto European soil over two days after Rabat loosened border controls amid a deepening diplomatic spat.

Meanwhile, in Madrid, the Spanish government held an emergency meeting of a special committee to track the migration crisis.

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said that she has informed the Moroccan Ambassador of Spain's great displeasure at the mass migration push at the country's border in Ceuta.

Gonzalez Laya speaking outside the Foreign Ministry in Madrid said that she had raised the issue at an virtual EU ministers meeting.

"This is a border that we share with the European Union" she said.

As she spoke, groups of far-right activists protested outside the Moroccan embassy in Madrid.

The small group of 200, were kept a distance from the embassy by units of riot police.

The protesters shouted offensive remarks and demanded the resignation of Sanchez.
