A second railway bridge collapsed in Russia on Sunday, this time in the southern Kursk region, while a freight train was crossing. Part of the train fell onto the road below, but no fatalities have been reported. The acting governor of Kursk, Alexander Khinshtein, confirmed the incident on Telegram, stating it occurred in the Zheleznogorsk district near the Ukrainian border.
Earlier, on Sunday morning, a passenger train derailed in Russia’s Bryansk region after a bridge collapsed onto the tracks. The train was traveling from Klimovo to Moscow when the accident occurred in the Vygonichsky district, located about 100 kilometers from Ukraine. Seven people were killed, and 30 others, including two children, were injured. One of the children is in critical condition.
Russian authorities believe the bridge collapse was caused by "illegal interference" with the transport infrastructure. The train collided with fallen debris, causing it to derail. The cause of the interference is still being investigated.
Bryansk, located near the Ukrainian border, has been a hotspot for attacks and conflict-related damage since the war began. The region has faced shelling and drone strikes, raising concerns that the bridge collapse could be linked to sabotage.
The regional governor, Alexander Bogomaz, confirmed that emergency teams are working at the scene and providing help to the victims. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working to find out more about the cause of both collapses.
