At least 21 people were killed, and ten others injured Monday afternoon after a public transportation bus plunged into a ravine in a rural area of central Bolivia, according to a preliminary police report. Rescue efforts continued into Monday night. The injured were taken to medical centres in Quillacollo city, said transit police chief, Helsner Torrico.

"We have counted 21 people dead, including three minors," he said.

The bus fell into the over 200-metre deep ravine while on its way from the rural town of Morochata to Quillacollo in Cochabamba province. The accident occurred on a winding dirt road in a mountainous region. Police said they did not know the cause of the accident.
