Clothing believed to belong to Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student who mysteriously disappeared in the Dominican Republic, has been found on a lounge chair at the beach where she was last seen over a week ago, according to local reports.
Photos obtained by local media show a white netted sarong draped over a lounge chair and a pair of beige flip-flops covered in sand beside it. Authorities say the clothing closely resembles what Konanki was wearing in surveillance footage from the night she vanished. The items show no signs of tampering, police told the outlet.
Officials believe Konanki may have left her clothes on the chair before entering the ocean, wearing only a brown bikini. However, while initial reports suggested a possible drowning, authorities have not ruled out foul play.
A key person of interest in the case is Joshua Riibe, a 22-year-old senior at Minnesota’s St. Cloud State University, who was seen with Konanki on the night she went missing.
Konanki was last seen around 4:15 a.m. on March 6, walking near the beach with Riibe, as shown in surveillance footage. At one point, the two were seen holding hands, with Konanki’s college friends nearby.
According to reports, after her friends left the beach to return to their hotel, Konanki remained with Riibe. Authorities believe a power outage at the resort may have shut down surveillance cameras, making it difficult to track what happened next.
Riibe, a former wrestler and football player from Iowa, has given conflicting accounts of the night. He most recently claimed he saved Konanki from rough Caribbean waters but lost track of her in the darkness.
Though authorities have stressed that Riibe is not a suspect, he has refused to answer key questions since his parents hired a lawyer. Meanwhile, the Public Prosecutor’s Office is expected to intensify interrogations as the search for Konanki continues.
Her disappearance remains a mystery, and officials are working to determine whether it was a tragic accident or something else.
