Tear gas, water cannon used on Bishkek protesters

Police clashed with protesters in Kyrgzstan's capital on Monday, as thousands of people took to the streets following the results of parliamentary elections that gave victory to pro-government parties.

The preliminary results of Sunday's vote gave Unity party (Birimdik) and the My Homeland Kyrgyzstan party (Mekenim Kyrgyzstan) around a quarter of votes each.

Two more parties - Kyrgyzstan and Butun Kyrgyzstan - were announced to have passed the 7% threshold to gain seats in the parliament.

Meanwhile, the country's main opposition parties were said to have failed to garner the necessary votes for seats.

On Monday demonstrators gathered in Ala-Too Square in the capital Bishkek demanding new elections within a month.

Police deployed water cannon in clashes with protesters, after thousands marched through the streets.

Opposition parties said they formed a coalition and demand Central Election Committee to cancel results within a day.

Kyrgyzstan's Central Election Commission said that around 55% of voters participated in the election.
