New Delhi: Nigerian model Ololade Ayelabola has set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk, covering 125.11 km (77.74 mi) during a fashion event in Lagos last October. The event, which spanned five days, was aimed at promoting inclusivity in the fashion industry.
Ayelabola, 26, decided to organize the record-breaking event after facing rejection in the modeling industry due to her height. During an audition for Lagos Fashion Week, she was told that despite her talent, she was not tall enough to be selected. This experience led her to create a platform where models of all backgrounds, including those with albinism, vitiligo, tribal marks, and plus-size models, could participate.
Speaking about her achievement to, she said, “For every step I took on the catwalk, I was walking against stereotypes and challenges in the fashion industry.” Despite physical exhaustion and injuries, she continued the walk, supported by cheering spectators who came to witness the event, as per Guiness World Record.
Ayelabola described the record as a personal victory and a message to aspiring models who face similar barriers. “This is to show that dreams are valid. I hope this inspires others to pursue their goals, no matter the challenges.”
Her efforts have drawn attention to the need for greater diversity in the fashion industry, encouraging a shift toward more inclusive representation on the runway.
