President Donald Trump , just minutes ago, on Friday, announced the launch of the F-47 fighter jet program, calling it the most advanced and powerful aircraft ever built. The new stealth jet, which has reportedly been in secret testing for nearly five years, will operate alongside autonomous drones and is designed to counter China’s growing air force capabilities. The fighter jet's development is part of NGAD effort (Next Generation Air Dominance).
Speaking from the Oval Office alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump described the F-47 as a technological breakthrough in military aviation.
“The F-47 will be the most advanced, most capable, most lethal aircraft ever built,” Trump declared. “An experimental version of the plane has secretly been flying for almost five years, and we’re confident that it massively overpowers the capabilities of any other nation.”
He added that the aircraft will feature cutting-edge stealth capabilities, making it “virtually unseeable” and the most powerful jet of its kind. “The F-47 is equipped with state-of-the-art stealth technology. It’s virtually unseeable and unprecedented power, the most power of any jet of its kind ever made," he said.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the F-47 will be introduced in the 2030s and will work in coordination with semi-autonomous drones to ensure U.S. air superiority. Unlike the F-35, which is primarily designed for air-to-ground combat, the F-47 will serve as an air-to-air fighter, replacing the aging F-22.
The fighter jet will be built by Boeing.
Air Force officials have defended the need for piloted aircraft in future warfare, arguing that even as drone technology advances, human pilots remain critical for high-intensity combat missions.
Billionaire and Trump ally Elon Musk has previously criticized piloted jets as “obsolete in the age of drones.”
The F-47 is set to be the most expensive fighter jet program in history, with individual planes potentially costing several hundred million dollars each—far surpassing the $80 million price tag of the current Lockheed Martin F-35.
Some observers speculate that the “47” in its name is a nod to Trump, who is the 47th president of the United States.
With this announcement, the administration is making a bold move to redefine America’s air combat strategy and reinforce its military dominance for decades to come. R&D remains the key factor in the race of military superiority.
