Face masks compulsory in UK shops from Friday

Face masks will be mandatory in shops, takeaways and other public places starting Friday, the UK government said. In the latest attempt to help curb the spread of the new coronavirus, the government has released new rules, in less than 12 hours before they become enforced.

It said the new measure was an important step in lifting the lockdown, which has been in place since it was announced by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on March 23.

While it would be compulsory to wear a face mask when purchasing takeaway items, the face coverings won't be not be mandatory in restaurants.

Speaking to British broadcaster Sky News, Edinburgh University's Global Public Health Chair said that a mask helped to block any droplets that could be coming out through speaking or coughing or sneezing from your nose or your mouth.

It was a "simple way" to protect others, said Devi Sridhar.

Those who are caught not wearing a face covering could be fined up to 200 pounds (250 US dollars).
